A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

unnamed
Hi All,

This week marks the beginning of the Church season of Lent. This is a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. It's a time to reflect, grow, and prepare for Easter.

As a school, we marked the beginning of the Lenten season in numerous ways. On Tuesday we took part in the tradition of Shrove Tuesday with some wonderful pancakes made by Mr Steve! The custom of Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday dates back hundreds of years. As the final day before the fasting period of Lent, Christians celebrated a final chance of frivolity and indulgence. As people tried to use up eggs and fats like butter, batches of pancakes were often made on this day and so the custom began.

On Wednesday, we celebrated a whole school liturgy with Father Rodrigo to mark Ash Wednesday, the official start of the Lenten season. The school was also represented at the Project Compassion launch at the Cathedral this week by Miss Nolan and some student leaders. Here they joined with the Bishop and students from Catholic schools across the Darwin region to mark the start of Caritas Australia's Project Compassion campaign.

Each year during Lent schools, churches and community groups raise funds to support Caritas Australia's work both in Australia and around the world to help those in need. This reflects the focus of almsgiving during the Lenten season. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box to make any donations. More information about Caritas Australia and Project Compassion can be found here: https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/

School Board Meeting
Last week we had our first School Board meeting for 2025. The School Board provides an opportunity for members of the school community to play an advisory role. The Chair of the School Board for 2025 is Kirsten Beames. The parent representatives are Julia Kang, Alana Young and Ralph Dein with Father Rodrigo as the Parish representative. There are two remaining positions for parent representatives if you wish to join the School Board. The Board meets six times per year on a Monday evening. If you would like more information please contact the school office.

NAPLAN
The annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing period for Grade Three and Five students runs from March 12th to 24th this each. Students participate in four tests during the period - writing, reading, language conventions and numeracy. More information for families can be found here: https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/for-parents-carers

It is important to remember that NAPLAN is just one part of the ongoing assessment and monitoring processes at the school. We all know that everyone has their own strengths and talents many of which are not covered by NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN does provide useful information to schools, education authorities and governments to see how approaches to learning are working.

360 Virtual Tour
I am very pleased to announce that the school's 360 virtual tour is now completed and live on our website. It provides a great opportunity for prospective families to get an insight into our wonderful facilities and grounds. Check it out here: https://www.sfasnt.catholic.edu.au/360_virtual_school_tour/
