A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
October is traditionally Mission Month for Catholic schools and organisations. Mission Month is a time to learn about and become involved in the missionary activities being undertaken by Catholic Missions all across the world. In the past St Francis of Assisi has held mission markets during October to raise money for this cause. However, this year we are focusing on raising awareness by taking part in Sockobter.
Socktober cultivates the passion of students to rise up, engage their local community, and take action against poverty through the world game of soccer. It provides young people in Australia with the opportunity to lead in mission, encouraging them to think not only of what they will do to help, but why they will do it.
To launch Socktober we held a ‘Socks and Crocs’ day which included a special assembly. This year, Catholic Mission's Socktober project is supporting children at Don Bosco's Caring Home in Mongolia. Each class is collecting clean socks to donate to less privileged communities. Donations will be collected from Weeks 3 to 5, and we'll use them to create soccer balls for a competition at the end of Week 5 to celebrate our efforts in supporting this great cause.
This Friday marks World Teachers’ Day in Australia which is a chance to celebrate teachers and thank them for all the work they do to educate, inspire and empower learners. I am sure that everyone can think of at least one teacher who made a positive impact on their lives.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful teachers at St Francis of Assisi for all of their hard work to support our students to learn and grow. I would also like to encourage anyone who has ever thought about becoming a teacher to seriously consider it. Teaching really is a wonderfully rewarding career with so many opportunities.
