“When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.”—Dalai Lama

Dear St Francis families,

Spending time in the classes across the school has brought me joy. I have left the classes smiling and at times laughing. It was a pleasure to share many fun experiences with the children during their learning. I have enjoyed coding with BeeBots, being a detective on a clue finding mission, listening to well written stories, sampling cooking and taking part in literacy and mathematics activities. There have been many examples of the Spirit of Jesus in the classes with kindness shown to peers, cooperation and helping their class teachers.

We encourage all of our students to take part in the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. Students will be sent home a reading log to record the great books they read in the challenge. We will collate the reading log data in the classes and across the school. Reading is great fun and very important for student development. Studies have shown the link between regular reading and improving student achievement. Daily reading aloud strengthens oral language, phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Every student from Transition to Year 6 is challenged to read 12 books in 24 weeks. We encourage daily reading at home.

Harmony week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. The colour orange is chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. We invite our students to dress in orange or add a splash of orange to their uniform next Wednesday
22nd March.

A reminder that our Parent/Teacher learning conversations are scheduled for next Wednesday 22 March. This is a great opportunity for you to learn about your child’s personal learning goals and their successes for the start of the 2023 school year.

Sadly, we have to farewell Ms McCarthy at the end of the term as she is needing to take time to be with family. She brought with her curriculum expertise and a passion for teaching and learning. We are very fortunate to have had Ms McCarthy for the time that we did. She has touched the hearts of our staff and students and she will be greatly missed.

Our Year 6 leaders will be assisting to lead students across the school in our coding club. They will be sharing their knowledge and skills on Scratch and ScratchJr to help our students program and create their own stories, games and animations. It is a fun way to learn to solve problems, design projects and be creative.

I commend our Year 3 and 5 students for their early efforts in NAPLAN. They have been calm, positive and given their best efforts.

Our Year 3/2 assembly will be tomorrow, and they have had a great time preparing for the audience. We look forward to their performance song. Come to school tomorrow wearing green for St Patrick's Day, bring a gold coin donation for Project Compassion.

It will be fun for our T-6 students to participate in our faction sports afternoon next Thursday afternoon.

Have a wonderful weekend.
.
