A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

unnamed
Hi All,

It has been great to see all students settling in so well to life at St Francis of Assisi. I have had the opportunity to be in all classrooms on a regular basis and it has been wonderful to see the learning that has been taking place. I want to take the chance to thank our staff for their hard work in creating positive learning environments.

Next week, the school will hold our 2024 Family Welcome and Information Evening. The idea for the event is to allow families both new and returning to visit classrooms, meet teachers and participate in a short presentation. The event will be held on Wednesday February 28th between 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm - we look forward to seeing you there!

NAPLAN
In March the annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests will take place in schools across Australia including at St Francis of Assisi. NAPLAN is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards. It is important to note that NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.

All NAPLAN tests (except for Year 3 Writing) are now completed online. The online tests are designed to provide precise results and are engaging for students. The tests are tailored (or adaptive) which means that each test presents questions that may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. This helps students remain engaged with the assessment.

Please contact me if you would like any more information about NAPLAN.

Bombing of Darwin Commemoration
On Monday, I had the honour of representing our school along with our 2024 School Captains, Piper Short and Joseph Croft at the Bombing of Darwin Commemoration. This year marks 82 years since the first bombs were dropped on Darwin during World War Two.

At the commemoration ceremony at the Darwin Convention Centre there was a wide range of dignitaries, military personnel, school representatives and family members of victims and survivors of the bombing. Each of the speakers shared different stories about the events of the time and it was a wonderful educational experience.

With Faith in their Future
